Sanita Puspure faces disciplinary proceedings after tweeting about coach, Sean Casey
Irish rower, Sanita Puspure is to face disciplinary proceedings after a contentious tweet in which she expressed her disappointment at the loss of coach Sean Casey. Casey was let go by performance director, Antonio Maurogiovanni, saying he hoped to recruit a new coach with “more appropriate Olympic experience”.
The deadline for the vacancy has been extended to January 15 and the stipulation of “appropriate Olympic experience” will leave Irish Rowing short on domestic applicants. The board of Rowing Ireland meets on January 13, and with reports of ongoing tension between their high-performance athletes and full-time staff, the issue is sure to be high on the agenda.

Sanita Puspure, 35, had a challenging 2017. She had to sit out competition at the European Championships through illness, and twice in the season had to travel back to her native Latvia for family bereavements. At the World Rowing Championships, she was pipped into fourth place by Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig in an event won by the Swiss sculler, Jeannine Gmelin, who enjoyed an outstanding season.
